Punk Rock Stickers

Hardly seems like the best way to describe today's sticker industry. Try cutthroat. For the moment, it's still anyone's game. That's because there's not one household name among the biggest punk rock stickers makers. The stickering of America is changing the look of every kid's room -- and every parent's home. We have become a nation stuck on stickers. They're on our letters, in our scrapbooks and pressed onto our apples and bananas.

And stickers have gone high-tech: Stickers have evolved into an international form of currency for kids and adults alike. Vote on Election Day? Then you probably left with a sticker on your lapel that bragged, ''I voted.'' Give blood? Then you likely got an ''I gave'' sticker. Walk into the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History? Watch out. A smiling security guard armed with a basket of stickers may slap a sticky dinosaur on you.

Nobody claims to know how many sticker designs exist, but there are some clear signs how popular the things are. When will the last sticker-free surface in America be stuck? Flight attendants complain that they find stickers stuck on seat tray tables and inside airplane lavatories.

Adults generally consider children's special finds--like punk rock stickers--a waste of money. Teachers look at the stuff kids hide in their pockets or inside their lunch-box "safes" as distractions to education. Even some art teachers don't give proper recognition to sticker artists, or view stickers as a legitimate art media and a viable children's art supply.
