Deafened by stereo speakers blaring obnoxious pop, blinded by multiple screens replicating soulless videos, you will search hopelessly for real music from a collection dwindling with the passage of time like the English language in Orwell\u2019s 1984. Why? Because enterprises like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drstrange.com\/\">Dr. Strange Records<\/a> won\u2019t exist.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The building that is the physical representation of Dr. Strange Records was the first post office in <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=34.1233333333,-117.579444444&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=34.1233333333,-117.579444444%20(Rancho%20Cucamonga%2C%20California)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rancho Cucamonga, California\">Rancho Cucamonga<\/a> 100 years ago. Located in the city\u2019s old town, it\u2019s a music store, punk museum, social center, clothing and accessory shop, and the very epitome of that corporate outlets like Virgin are not: a locale of wood, dust, grit, soul and history.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-iyR1b9EWdUI\/T3M9oxBrOqI\/AAAAAAAABbM\/JzUl-szkIVQ\/s1600\/l+(1).jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-iyR1b9EWdUI\/T3M9oxBrOqI\/AAAAAAAABbM\/JzUl-szkIVQ\/s320\/l+(1).jpg\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">When you walk into the place you enter a store of wooden floors and plaster walls replete with posters and paraphernalia from punk bands both old and new. Rummaging through several used sections will reward you with solid gold: You can find crazy, obscure albums likeWakey Wakey by The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/The%2BToy%2BDolls\" rel=\"lastfm\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"The Toy Dolls\">Toy Dolls<\/a>, Television\u2019s Marquee Moon, and Coulda\u2026Shoulda\u2026Woulda by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/Black%2BMarket%2BBaby\" rel=\"lastfm\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Black Market Baby\">Black Market Baby<\/a>. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-KTQc3wmT2z0\/T3NBmXano6I\/AAAAAAAABdE\/MDXP_A_UWi0\/s320\/l.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-KTQc3wmT2z0\/T3NBmXano6I\/AAAAAAAABdE\/MDXP_A_UWi0\/s1600\/l.jpg\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-KTQc3wmT2z0\/T3NBmXano6I\/AAAAAAAABdE\/MDXP_A_UWi0\/s320\/l.jpg\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">William \u201cBill\u201d Plaster is Dr. Strange, the man who runs the business that put the city of Rancho Cucamonga on the punk rock map. His office is a cold room where he runs his company, answering emails and shipping music all across the world. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I had to step over cartons of merchandise while Bill took a seat next to a computer that was probably manufactured in the mid-90\u2019s to find a place to perform the interview. Between the posters, the cd\u2019s, the shirts and other punk paraphenalia, it was difficult to tell which was merchandise and which was his. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cThe online store keeps me busy,\u201d he says. \u201cIt took three to four tries to get the website up. I used to do mail order with a typewriter. I\u2019d retype it every month. Right now I\u2019m sending a big package to a Russian embassy in Belgium. I send stuff to Tahiti, Croatia, Greece\u2026any developed country, all over the world.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">The man who would be Dr. Strange got into new wave in the 80\u2019s, as it bled into punk. \u201cBy my sophomore high school year I was listening to The Cars, Blondies, Devo, Oingo Boingo, then other bands like Black Flag, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slf.com\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Stiff Little Fingers\">Stiff Little Fingers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/Circle%2BJerks\" rel=\"lastfm\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Circle Jerks\">The Circle Jerks<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">In 1988, Plaster was working his last \u201creal\u201d job as a waiter, going to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtsac.edu\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Mt. San Antonio College\">Mt. San Antonio College<\/a> and putting together a record label. \u201cI didn\u2019t do it for the money\u2026I just wanted to pay rent, but I realized I had to put out a punk record before I died. I worked seven days a week, 12-16 hour days. I still wear a million hats. I\u2019m the order guy, the label guy, the retail guy&#8230;\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">1993 saw the rise of a dozen <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=34.121611,-116.93&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=34.121611,-116.93%20(Inland%20Empire%20%28California%29)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Inland Empire (California)\">Inland Empire<\/a> punk bands under the label of Dr. Strange Records. Groups such as Letseatlots, Guttermouth, Face to Face, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voodooglowskulls.com\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Voodoo Glow Skulls\">Voodoo Glow Skulls<\/a>, Golfball Liberation Front, and Mindless Thoughts were pushing the scene in a city that had never had one, playing at local venues like Spanky\u2019s, Munchies and The Showcase Theatre. \u201cBetween 1991 and 1996, anything would sell. I fathered a lot of bands, mostly from around Rancho Cucamonga.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Now, ten years later, Plaster has a history behind him and a future of doing what he loves ahead of him. His recent releases stand like menhirs in a punk rock Stonehenge:Coulda\u2026Shoulda\u2026Woulda by Black Market Baby, Killer on Craig\u2019s List by The Texas Thieves, and The Golden Age of Piracy by The Skulls, to mention a few.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-vx9BEGBGbkY\/T3NAKhg_NII\/AAAAAAAABc8\/vaa5R-W9LYg\/s1600\/images.jpg\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-vx9BEGBGbkY\/T3NAKhg_NII\/AAAAAAAABc8\/vaa5R-W9LYg\/s320\/images.jpg\" height=\"320\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: large;\">I tell Plaster about my nightmare, and how I feel the small chains are being ground under by the big ones. But even those big chains are being destroyed by the Internet in the form of Internet piracy. <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=31.75298,-8.17177&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=31.75298,-8.17177%20(Virgin%20Megastores)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Virgin Megastores\">Virgin Megastores<\/a> are going down in flames, so the smaller operations, owned by normal people who understand the art like Mr. Plaster, aren\u2019t going to be able to take it for long.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">\u201cYou\u2019re 100% right. It\u2019s cd burning that\u2019s killing me.\u201d The man known as Dr. Strange admits that it does hurt him. \u201cBefore it got big, I\u2019d sell 10,000 copies of an album. Now, I can only sell 1,000.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">His record store is one of the many hardcore punk landmarks you can find throughout southern California. The business is more than just a place to find all things obscure (or place an order for what you want if Dr. Strange doesn\u2019t have it), it\u2019s also an inspiration to the future punk musicians living in the suburbs around the store that still believe in the old skool.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-pH0OS1kMUBg\/T3M-2u2E7fI\/AAAAAAAABcU\/I4hH-stgHIs\/s320\/DSCN0430.JPG\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-pH0OS1kMUBg\/T3M-2u2E7fI\/AAAAAAAABcU\/I4hH-stgHIs\/s320\/DSCN0430.JPG\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Because of that, Plaster is still proud to have the job he has.\u201cI have been allowed to do what I truly love to do.
