“Doc’s Spotlight” #2 Today’s “Doc’s Spot [light]” is on one of the 1st [since 1974 for god’s sake!] Punk bands; Devo! The first time I heard Devo I hated them! I remember sitting in a math class in Junior High. It was 1978. The “cool” kid; Mike Lomath was playing a cassette, while in class of course, of Devo’s debut lp “Are We Not Men?”. I remember thinking to myself, what the hell is this weird crap? I mean this isn’t music! WAY beyond me at that time. But a couple quick years later, while a freshman in high school, I was hanging out with my oldest buddy [since 3rd grade] Glen. Glen had an older brother [always one of those involved in a story like this huh?] who was a big Devo fan. I think it was “Duty Now For The Future” or maybe “Freedom of Choice” that turned me on to Devo. I can still remember being at home listening to Devo full blast, grabbing a pair of scissors while staring at myself in the mirror and cutting, REAL short, just the top of my hair so it would stick up! Devo was the first band to really “motivate” me and they opened the door to a whole new way of thinking. I can’t thank them enough. My only Devo regret? NOT going to see them when Glen’s older brother asked us to go see Devo, The Germs and Blondie in Hollywood (I think at The Whiskey). I’m sure I was way too scared but man I regret that!!! Okay, stay tuned for another “Doc’s Spot [light]” next Friday. And remember, we are ALL Devo!
